Recommended calibers:
· Plains game– Any caliber from .270 to .338 WM with premium quality bullets.
· Dangerous game– .375 or bigger is mandatory.
· Ammunition is freely available in South Africa.
Firearm regulations:
No semi-automatic rifles or shotguns are permitted. Not more than one firearm per caliber is permitted. No more than 60 round of ammunition per firearm.
Importation and collection of firearms at the airport
Visitors bringing firearms into South Africa for purposes of hunting should try to obtain a copy of their temporary firearm import application– SAP 520– in advance from their hunting outfitter and complete it before arrival in South Africa. We can send you a copy of the form or you can download it of the internet. There are a few companies in south Africa that help clients to do their firearm paperwork before the day of arrival. They charge a fee to do your import for you which I recommend highly.
When is the best time to hunt in South Africa?
Hunting safaris are undertaken throughout the year. The best Months are from
April-October for rifle hunters, and for bow hunters we recommend from July– October.
Will we be met at the airport?
You will fly into OR Tambo international airport where Sarel and the other PH’s will be there to welcome you and escort you to the SAPS office to clear your rifles.
What are your terms of payment?
We require a US $1000 per person to confirm your safari. Deposits are not refundable but are transferable to other available dates. If a safari is postponed to the following year, there will be a US $500 penalty. All prices quoted are based on the exchange rate of the ZAR (South African Rand) against the US$ at the same time of going to print. If the exchange rate changes, we reserve the right to adjust our rates. Trophy fees and daily rates on the brochure are for 2022 hunting season.
What about my health?
Although South Africa and all our hunting areas are malaria-free zones, it is essential to take malaria prophylaxis if you are traveling to Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia or Botswana. Hunting is physically demanding so make sure that you are reasonably fit for maximum enjoyment. Please inform us about any medical conditions or dietary requirements that you have and if you are on medication, make sure that you bring sufficient quantities with you. There are hospitals and medical personnel within driving distance from all our camps.
Must I get insurance?
We recommend that clients take full personal and personal effects insurance for the duration of the safari that includes the following.
· Trip cancellation.
· Medical and emergency evacuation.
· Loss and personal effects.
· Accidental death and disability.
What kind of weapons should I bring?
It’s always best to bring a weapon which you are most familiar with. Specific calibers for your safaris will discussed depending on what you will be hunting. If, however you don’t feel the need to bring your own rifle, we have high end rifles available in various calibers to rent.
What are the passport and Visa requirements?
Valid passport and entry visas are required for entry into South Africa. Make sure your passport still has six months before it expires and that there is three unused pages still available for stamps or visas.
Customs and immigration will issue a tourist visa for three months on arrival in South Africa, free of charge– but bear in mind that some countries need visas to be arranged beforehand, so double check. Children under 18 may need unabridged birth certificates.
Recommended amount of ammo for a 7-day safari or longer:
By law you are restricted to 60 rounds per caliber for plains game.
(Premium expanding bullets e.g. Barnes X, Swift A frame, Nosler)
Dangerous game: 60 Rounds of quality premium softs and solids. (Barnes X, Swift A frame, Hornady DGS)
